Building and district thermal retrofit and management solutions

THERMOSS aims to produce an outstanding contribution to the wider deployment of advanced building heating and cooling technologies in the EU. It will significantly enhance energy efficiency of residential buildings and facilitate their connection to district heating and cooling networks.

In order to achieve this challenging objective, four sub-objectives are derived:

  • Ensure an efficient match between supply and demand of energy through real-time management of thermal energy at building level, then scaled up to district level for District Heating and Cooling (DHC) connected buildings.
  • Increase the efficiency of residential building thermal retrofitting, with a target of 30% energy consumption reduction. THERMOSS proposes to concentrate on 4 sets of technology package retrofit solutions, associated with a sizing toolbox, that can be applied for standalone residential and district connected buildings (heating and cooling) covering the European different climates.
  • Sharpen the construction and energy industry awareness as to the need to provide open access to a heating / cooling technology database to promote the deployment of the most effective solutions. In order to promote the wide acceptance of new efficient heat/cold production systems, it is proposed, an open database and portal to publish available and proven technologies, taking into account building typologies and European climates to focus on generating value through access (and potential re-use) of specific type of data that have a significant public-oriented interest, including data from publicly funded research project.
  • Demonstrate a high potential of replication throughout Europe, allowing a large market introduction of the selected THERMOSS solutions before 2025, while guaranteeing a payback period below 10 years, by bringing the proposed THERMOSS technological solutions to a TRL 7.

Abstract

The 20% primary energy consumption reduction targets set by the European Energy Efficiency Directive (EED), published in 2012, call for effective and wide-scale building heating and cooling systems upgrade strategies. These will be successful only if they base upon the right combination of technology innovation, industrial commitment and building owners awareness. In line with this statement, THERMOSS proposes an industry-focused, innovation-intensive approach to ease and foster the introduction of cutting-edge heating and cooling technologies for building energy retrofitting at European level, targeting residential buildings and buildings connected to District Heating and Cooling (DHC) networks. The aim of THERMOSS is to define a set of retrofitting heating and cooling packages based on cutting-edge, high potential, market-ready technologies that are connected together thanks to an open ICT platform for smart energy management at building and district-level. The THERMOSS technologies have been picked out from the catalogues of prominent European industrial players, Bosch, Veolia, Exergy, Schneider Electric taking into account business profitability, energy efficiency and potential for large-scale deployment. They will be tuned, combined and sized as part of the project thanks to dedicated tools, to optimize their joint impact. THERMOSS advocates a geo-clustered approach to the definition of these packages, in order to increase the impact of the solutions with respect to specific climatic conditions and – when applicable – specific National policies (e.g. fiscal incentives) and regulations. The THERMOSS packages and the platform will be thoroughly demonstrated in seven experimental and demonstration sites, covering all the dimensions highlighted by the call: residential buildings, district heating and cooling networks, in different climatic zones.
